Restoration Hardware. So many people love the look, but not everyone wants to shop there. How can you get the style without setting foot in the store? Let me teach you how!
I personally call this look Loft Chic or Transitional Classic. Both terms describe a style that are a blend of contemporary, modern, and traditional with touches of industrial or rough-hewn goods thrown in. It's what I lovingly call the Restoration Hardware look, but I'm pretty sure that Restoration Hardware might not like it if I did that! There are also a few other furniture vendors that have a similar look, like Four Hands and Dovetail, two of my favorite designer lines.
With all three of these furniture vendors you will find that many of the room vignettes on their websites are set in loft-style rooms. That is because they all have a chic urban vibe.

Who Likes This Style?
Typically people who like this style are city dwellers. These urbanites love the amenities of living in the city. You can typically find them in their favorite neighborhood restaurants and trying out new trendy spots. Loft Chic style lovers don't always live in a loft, but they like the classic, yet of-the-moment look. From millennials buying their first home to downsizing retirees, I have had clients in a variety of life-stages that love the Loft Chic look. The common thread with these clients is that they all loved their neighborhoods and "city" life in general.
Elements of the Style
Loft Chic is sophisticated, but casual. As I mentioned above, it is a blend of modern, contemporary, and traditional design. Usually you will find sleek, clean lines that are shared by modern and contemporary design. The upholstered furniture is low to the ground and there is an achromatic or monochromatic color scheme that is typically seen in contemporary design. You will also find variations of Modern classics furniture designed by the masters of the Modern period, such as Eames, Mies van der Rohe, and Wegner.
Loft Chic is a slightly eclectic style, where you will also find traditional design elements from the Classical, Baroque, and Neo-Classical periods. Items from these periods that you might see in the Loft Chic style are chesterfield sofas, busts, use of the classical orders (columns), Oriental rugs, and architectural details and embellishments, such as moldings and pediments. These details can be found in art and accent pieces or they can be front and center, like the use of a chesterfield as an anchoring piece of furniture.

Often, these details will be manipulated from their historical context. For example, in their traditional context, moldings are used as accents and typically are contrasted from the wall color by using bright white painted finishes or they may be gilded, as they were during the Baroque period. However, in this contemporary use they are usually painted the same color as the wall to create a monochromatic backdrop.
Parting Tips
The final piece of this style is a touch of industrial or rough-hewn style. This gives the space a hand-crafted feel. You can add these touches in bigger pieces of furniture such as accent chairs or side tables. However, if you want a look that is a little more sleek and classic, you may want to limit the industrial look and simply select accessories from this category, such as lighting, art, and objet d'art.
What sets the Loft Chic look apart from Eclectic style or Farmhouse Modern is that it is sophisticated and understated.
How to Create a Chic Space
The keys to getting the Restoration Hardware look are:
- Neutral and monochromatic color palette – whether light or dark
- Contemporary and modern anchor furniture pieces – chairs, sofas, beds, dining tables, case goods, etc.
- Accent pieces in industrial or rough-hewn, such as accent chairs, side tables, cocktail tables, lighting
- Natural or natural looking fabrics, like slubby linen, leather, dupioni silk, woven fabrics
- Natural wood colors, either stained or unstained
- Iron, stainless steel, and antiqued brass will be the preferred metals
- Traditional elements in the art and accessories, like busts, columns, distressed Oriental rugs
- Unique traditional or industrial styled lighting
